China Introduces Entry Bans of Up to Five Years for False Statements in the Visa Application Process

Effective September 15, 2026, new regulations governing entry and exit procedures will take effect in China, bringing about significant changes for travelers and visa applicants. On July 31, 2026, the State Council of China published a corresponding decree, which was signed by Premier Li Qiang on July 22. The core of the new regulation is a mechanism that allows the relevant authorities in China to temporarily bar foreign nationals from entering the country if they provide false information during the visa or entry process.

Specifically, the new regulation stipulates that individuals who submit false documents or provide false information when applying for a Chinese visa abroad or during entry inspections at the Chinese border may be subject to an entry ban of one to five years. This is China’s response to cases of document forgery or knowingly false statements made in connection with visa applications and border controls, which will be punished much more severely in the future than in the past.

It is important for those affected to note that the ban is not imposed automatically and will not necessarily be for the full maximum duration of five years in every case.
