Conditions for obtaining a journalistic visa for China (J)
Are you a journalist planning to work in China? A journalistic visa allows you to enter China as a correspondent for newspapers, films, television or radio, or to engage in freelance activities on site. To obtain permission, you will need, in addition to an application and a journalistic ID, also other documents. Usually, you will have to provide detailed information about your travel plans, such as the place and time of research, as well as about the people you plan to meet. The Chinese press body must approve your travel request. Without a special journalistic visa, working in the country is strictly prohibited! A regular business visa will not suffice. If you plan to bring equipment into China, such as cameras, a special permit may be required.

Important changes
Starting from 2023, China has temporarily suspended the collection of fingerprints from applicants for single and double-entry journalistic visas (J2) valid for up to 180 days. This policy will last until December 31, 2025.
If you are applying for a long-term journalistic visa (J1) to China, you must submit fingerprints at the official embassy department, visa center. They will be stored for 5 years, and during this period you will be able to apply for a visa to China in the usual manner. Find out here, how we can provide you with qualified support in the new application process and what else you need to know about fingerprints.
Types of Journalistic Visas
Chinese authorities divide visas for journalistic activities into two subcategories. Which visa is suitable for your trip depends on how long and for whom you work in China.
Long-term Journalistic Visa: J1 Visa
With the J1 visa type, you are allowed to stay in China for more than 180 days. The Chinese consulates issue the J1 visa to foreign journalists or specialists in the fields of 'media and reporting' if they work for a media company based in China. The intended duration of stay in China is more than 6 months.
Short-term Journalistic Visa: J2 Visa
Foreign journalists who travel to China for professional reasons for a period of less than 180 days receive the J2 visa.
