Traveling with the Online Visa: ETA
What is an ETA?
An ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) is an electronic travel authorization, also known as an online visa or e-visa. Many countries such as India, Sri Lanka, and Australia offer the ETA system as an alternative to the traditional visa. Unlike traditional visas, ETAs are only available for specific travel purposes, such as tourism, transit, or business trips, and often only for air travelers.
Countries with a valid ETA system are
The eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is required for citizens from visa-exempt countries (e.g. EU, Australia, Japan) when entering by air.
- The ETA Subclass 601 is valid for a range of countries (including the USA, South Korea, Singapore, etc.) and allows for short-term travel.
- There is also eVisitor (Subclass 651) - a similar system for EU citizens.
- The ETA system is available for both tourists and business travelers. This eVisa is valid for 12 months, with a maximum stay of 3 months per entry.
NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is required for tourists from visa-exempt countries.
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation) is required for citizens of most visa-exempt countries.
- The ETA Sri Lanka is required for almost all foreigners and must be applied for online before travel.
- Sri Lanka offers three types of ETAs:for tourists, for business travelers, and for transit. These are valid for short-term travelers and provide an easy and quick way to apply for a visa without having to visit a consulate.
- Indian e-Visa (essentially an electronic visa, but also issued in ETA format) - available for citizens of over 160 countries.
- India offers an electronic travel authorization (ETA) only for tourists and only for those arriving by air. Unlike a regular tourist visa, the ETA can be applied for online , but is only valid for short stays (up to 30 days). We offer both ETA and traditional tourist visas.

Benefits of Online Visa
The visa application can be completed entirely online without going through the traditional paper process or visiting a consulate.
Online visas are usually processed faster than traditional visas and require minimal paperwork. To apply, you typically need to upload a copy of your passport and a photo.
By applying online, you save time as you do not need to travel to the consulate, and you also save on visa fees.
Disadvantages of E-Visa
An E-Visa is not available for all purposes. In India, for example, the ETA is only allowed for tourist trips. In some countries, entry with ETA is also restricted to air travelers.
An E-Visa can limit the length of stay in a country. In India, for example, it is only valid for 30 days and for a single entry. Regular visas can be valid for a longer period of time.
In some countries, the ETA is only available for travelers entering by air. For travelers who want to enter by other means, a regular visa may be required.

How do I obtain and validate my visa?
Once you have applied for an e-visa, you will receive a confirmation email. Please note that unlike a traditional visa, an e-visa is not printed on paper and you will not receive a stamp in your passport. All information is digitally stored and can be accessed by airlines, border authorities, and other interested organizations.
Important Note:
In order to enter a country with an E-visa, you must have the passport with which you applied, as the E-authorization is linked to your passport number. If your passport is lost or expires, you will need to reapply for an ETA, even if your old authorization has not expired yet.
The ETA system simplifies the visa application process for citizens of many countries significantly and makes it convenient and fast. However, as with any visa application, it is important to consider the country-specific restrictions and requirements.
