Entry rules changed for Russians traveling to Kazakhstan and other CIS countries
From January 20, 2026, new rules for crossing the border for underage citizens of Russia will come into effect. Now, for trips abroad, including to countries of the near abroad, children will need a mandatory international passport.
The changes will affect trips to those countries where Russians could previously enter with domestic documents. In particular, this applies to Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia. Adults and teenagers over 14 years old, as before, will be able to use a domestic passport.
Previously, children under 14 were allowed to cross the border with a birth certificate, but this document will no longer be considered valid for international travel. The new rules are designed to enhance the security of minors and eliminate cases of document forgery.
Those planning to travel in 2026 should apply for an international passport for their child in advance to avoid problems at the border.
