To enter Iran, you need to have a valid reference number (Iran visa authorization code, Iran visa approval, Iran invitation letter) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, regardless of the purpose of the trip. Iranian authorities also refer to this document as an electronic visa.

This requirement applies to all types of non-immigrant visas, including business, tourist, work, medical, journalistic, student, family, and investment visas. The only exception is a transit visa, where the consulate accepts the main visa for the final destination as proof of the purpose of the trip.

Iran Invitation Letter

Tourist invitation with the corresponding number for tourist visa in Iran is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran upon request of an accredited local tourist company. Business invitations, which are a mandatory requirement for obtaining a business visa in Iran, are also valid only if they are certified by the Ministry. The Iranian business partner is the contact person for the foreign business traveler to arrange the actual letter.

In case of other intentions, such as journalistic activities, entry into Iran also requires permission from the competent ministry.

The invitation letter usually contains information about:

number of planned entries

Each approved invitation is assigned an individual number, which is required by the traveler when applying for a visa. The responsible consulate in the applicant's country also receives notification from the ministry.

Invitation and Visa Validity

The Embassy of Iran issues a visa for a period approved by the relevant authority in Iran, i.e. the maximum length of stay depends on the invitation.

Attention: limited validity of the reference number

The reference number is valid for a limited time only (approximately 20 days), during which you need to apply for a visa. After receiving the number, travelers should wait for 3 days before submitting documents to the embassy.
