Current Travel and Safety Information for Tanzania
On July 4, 2026, new travel and safety advisories for Tanzania were published. These advisories pertain in particular to the upcoming anti-government protests on July 7, 2026, known as “Saba Saba Day.” Travelers should be prepared for possible demonstrations, increased security checks, and restrictions on freedom of movement.
It is strongly recommended to avoid non-essential travel to the southern part of the Mtwara region, as well as to the islands and coastal regions south of Kisiju. The security situation in these areas is tense, and there is an increased risk of violent clashes.
Travelers should exercise particular caution while in Tanzania and prepare for potential crisis situations. This includes avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings of people, as well as following the instructions of security forces. It is advisable not to take photos of security forces or protests.
The political situation in Tanzania remains tense following the presidential and parliamentary elections in October 2025. At that time, violent protests broke out and there were significant restrictions on internet and mobile phone service. The supply situation was also affected. Travelers should be prepared for possible renewed restrictions on air and ferry travel, particularly to Zanzibar.
In addition to the political unrest, there are also health risks. An outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has been classified by the WHO as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern.” Although there have been no confirmed cases in Tanzania to date, travelers should take precautions.
