FAQ: main questions about e-visa to Tanzania

What is Tanzania eVisa?

Tanzania eVisa is an electronic entry permit that can be obtained online without the need to visit the consulate. After approval, eVisa is sent to your email, which you need to print out and present upon entry.

What types of eVisa are available?

There are three main types: tourist (up to 90 days), business visa (up to 90 days) and transit (up to 7 days). The tourist eVisa is the most popular for vacations and safaris. The business visa is suitable for business trips, meetings, and negotiations. The transit visa is aimed at a short stopover en route.

Who can apply for eVisa?

Citizens of most countries, including the USA, EU, Canada, Australia, and others, can apply for eVisa. There are exceptions — citizens of some countries do not need a visa, while others require a reference visa. See the list of countries on this page.

Do I need an eVisa if my country is on the visa-free list?

If your country is exempt from visa requirements for entries up to 90 days (e.g., Kenya, South Africa, etc.), then an eVisa is not required. The necessity formally depends on nationality. When in doubt, it is better to clarify with our managers.

Can I enter without an eVisa and obtain a visa on arrival?

Yes, citizens of most countries can obtain a visa on arrival in Tanzania. However, it is important to consider that border processing involves certain risks, including the possibility of denial and long waiting times. Therefore, it is preferable to arrange eVisa in advance — it speeds up the process, reduces stress, and helps avoid queues at the airport.

How much does eVisa cost?

A single-entry tourist eVisa costs from 89 euros. You can find out the current price on the «Cost» page.

How long does the application review take?

Usually 7–15 working days, but the period can  increase. It is recommended to apply 2–3 weeks before the trip.

What documents need to be provided?

A scan of the biometric passport spread with a minimum validity of 6 months, color photo, itinerary (tickets), and accommodation confirmation are required. For business or transit visas — additional documents (invitation, itinerary, transit, etc.) are needed. Sometimes a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.

How to upload a photo?

The photo must be in passport format (2×2″ or 35×45 mm), taken against a white background, without headgear (except for religious cases), in JPEG/PNG format, up to 2‑5 MB. Carefully follow the requirements to avoid delays. A blurry photo is a common reason for rejection.

Can I extend eVisa on-site?

Yes, an extension is possible at the Tanzanian immigration service — up to an additional 90 days, provided the annual limit is not exceeded. Extension is not guaranteed and is paid separately. The decision is made by the local immigration office.

Can I change eVisa after approval?

No, only minimal corrections are made through customer support after approval. For significant changes — a new application must be submitted. Check all details before payment.

What to do if the application is rejected?

In case of refusal, you can make corrections to the documents or photos and reapply. The reason for refusal is stated in the official letter. Reapplication is possible, but unfortunately, the consular fee is non-refundable. To avoid such situations, we recommend seeking help from our managers — they carefully check all data and minimize the risk of refusal.

Where to present eVisa upon entry?

A printed copy needs to be shown to the immigration officer upon arrival in Tanzania. A passport and, possibly, a ticket and insurance are also required. An entry stamp will be placed there.

Which entry point can be used?

eVisa is suitable for all official ports, including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar airports, and border crossings. It is unlikely to encounter a refusal at a legal border.

Is medical insurance required?

Medical insurance is not mandatory by law, but is highly recommended to cover expenses. For the island of Zanzibar, insurance is mandatory (ZIC) from October 1, 2024. It covers unforeseen medical expenses.

Is a yellow fever vaccination certificate required?

Mandatory for entry from countries with risky fever — Africa, South America. The certificate is presented during airport control. Without it, entry may be denied.

Can I work on a tourist eVisa?

No, tourist status does not imply work. A special visa is required for work or residency. Violation threatens deportation.

What is a Referral Visa?

This is a special visa approved by the commissioner for citizens of some countries (e.g., Nigeria). It requires submission at the consulate in advance. Processing time — often longer.

What to do if the route changes?

eVisa does not need to be changed after receipt if the purpose remains the same. However, if a transit is performed, the 7-day period must not be violated. For other cases — apply for a new visa.

Can I enter with eVisa after the preferential period expires?

The visa is valid strictly during the specified period. If the departure is delayed — get a deposit extension on-site. Without this — fines and entry bans apply.

Can I apply for several people in one account?

Yes, the system allows for group applications, but each receives their eVisa. It is convenient for families to apply together, but check surnames and birth dates. Mistakes increase the risk of refusal.

What to do if eVisa PDF is lost?

Just log into your personal account and download it again. A PDF copy also comes in the email. Tip: keep several copies on your phone and a paper version.

Validity period of the e-visa to Tanzania?

The visa is valid from the date of approval, but the term starts from crossing the border. You will receive a stamp upon entry, and 90/30/7 days are counted from that date. Plan your return ticket with extra time to avoid misunderstandings.
