You choose Turkmenistan as a transit country to visit an adjacent state? The transit visa allows you to cross the Turkmen territory on your journey to your destination to reach one of the neighboring countries. These include Iran, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Afghanistan. In addition, a longer airport transit or continuing after a sea voyage on the Caspian Sea - for example, starting from Azerbaijan or Russia - is conceivable. While ship travelers are the exception, many car and motorcycle riders take advantage of the visa for transit in Turkmenistan.

Staying in the transit area is visa-free for German flight passengers with a direct connecting flight. When leaving the airport and all other forms of entry into Turkmenistan, foreigners are generally required to have a visa.

The Turkmen embassy issues transit visas only to transit travelers who can prove their planned onward journey when applying for the visa. Proof includes main visas for the country of entry to Turkmenistan and for the destination. In addition, each applicant is required to send an informal letter to the embassy with the following details about the travel route:

• Purpose and destination of the trip
• Specific visa request, desired visa validity
• Desired processing time (regular up to 15 working days, Express: up to 5 working days)
• Country of travel start/entry
• Entry and exit points at the Turkmen border
• Main visa: Information on validity

The permitted length of stay is limited to a maximum of 5 days. The transit visa for Turkmenistan entitles to a single entry. If you pass through the inland state on the outbound and return journey, you will need two visas.

For entry into Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran, an entry visa is required. In Turkmenistan's neighboring country Kazakhstan, stays of up to 15 days are visa-free for Germans as well as citizens of France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Korea, and the USA until July 15, 2015.

The onward journey to Azerbaijan is usually by air, as the ferry connection across the Caspian Sea is very irregular. Iran can only be reached from Turkmenistan by land, the same currently applies to Uzbekistan. Visitors can enter Afghanistan through the border crossings of Serhetabat (Russian: Kuschka) and Imam-Nasar, but as in all cases, the travel warnings of the Foreign Office must be observed.
