New Indonesian Visa Rules: Who is Eligible for the GCI Program
Indonesia has launched a new visa mechanism, Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI), which effectively grants the right to permanent residence without the need to renew status. The program is aimed at former citizens of the country and their descendants and has already appeared in the electronic application system. Unlike standard Indonesian visas, which are limited in duration, GCI provides an indefinite stay regime and free cross-border travel without the need for re-entry permits.
The new visa is not equivalent to citizenship and does not grant employment or political rights, however, it significantly simplifies legal residence in the country. GCI holders are not required to confirm investments, maintain a marriage with an Indonesian citizen, or meet other conditions typical for temporary permits. Applications can be made entirely online, but detailed rules are still being formed, and processing times are not officially designated.
The government is betting on family and historical ties with Indonesia: children of citizens, spouses in mixed families, and descendants up to the second degree of kinship will be eligible for the visa. However, GCI holders will still require a separate work permit, and restrictions on property ownership for foreigners remain. Experts believe that the launch of such a visa will be an important step in liberalizing migration policy and strengthening ties with the Indonesian diaspora.
