Sri Lanka launched a visa for digital nomads and a 180-day visa
Sri Lanka has announced a major update to its visa policy, focusing on longer and more comfortable stays for foreigners in the country. For the first time, a special visa for digital nomads has been launched, designed for remote workers, and the duration of the standard tourist visa has been extended to 180 days. The new rules aim to attract travelers who want to combine leisure with remote work and get to know the island longer without the need to frequently extend their status.
The visa for digital nomads is issued for one year with the possibility of subsequent renewal. Applicants over 18 years old who earn income exclusively from abroad and are not employed by Sri Lankan companies can apply for it. Holders of such a permit will be able to rent housing, open personal bank accounts, use local infrastructure, and educate children in international schools. At the same time, employment in Sri Lankan organizations remains strictly prohibited, and a government fee is provided for processing.
At the same time, the tourist visa has received an expanded format: instead of the previous 90 days, foreigners will be able to stay in the country for up to 180 days on one permit. Tourists are still restricted from any work within the country — only remote activities on behalf of foreign employers are allowed.
