Entry requirements for Algeria

Visa requirement in Algeria

According to the entry requirements, a visa requirement applies in Algeria for Germans, Austrians, Swiss, and most other foreign visitors. The visa must be obtained at least 2 weeks before entry from an Algerian diplomatic mission. In case of rejection of the application, which only occurs in exceptional cases, the applicant will not receive a refund of the fees. Visas on arrival are not available. Entry is only permitted with a passport valid for 6 months beyond the expected end of the trip. A temporary passport is permitted, but the identity card is not.

Visa issuance and procurement

In Germany, the Algerian Embassy in Berlin and the Consulate General of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria in Frankfurt are responsible for issuing visas. The diplomatic and consular representations are official sources of information regarding Algeria's entry requirements. Applicants have the option to apply for their visa directly at the embassy or to commission the visa procurement. As an accredited visa service, we are happy to handle communication with the authorities on your behalf. Tourists requiring visas who intend to travel to the southern part of the country must have an invitation from a travel agency recognized by the Algerian Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts. The letter must list the duration and itinerary of the trip in detail. No special permits are required for other parts of the country.

Traveling to Algeria with minors

Children's entries in the passports of their legal guardians have not been allowed since 2012. Each child requires their own identity document and visa. With minors of Algerian descent, it is important to note that, according to Algerian family law, the right to decide on the child's residence lies solely with the father. If the father is from Algeria or another Muslim state, his consent for the child to leave Algeria - personally or in writing - is required.

Vaccination requirements

A yellow fever vaccination is only mandatory when entering from a high-risk area. Visitors entering directly from Germany or other non-infection areas do not need to provide proof for the visa application.

Entry with a private vehicle and customs regulations

Temporary import of a private car is generally allowed. However, travelers with vehicles should expect waiting times at the border. Travelers with vehicles should present the international insurance card. Bringing binoculars, navigation devices (e.g. GPS receivers), radios, laser pointers, or similar items is prohibited. Valuable electronic devices and currencies must be declared upon entry. It is prohibited to export Algerian dinars from the country.

Exemptions from visa requirements

Only nationals of the following countries are allowed to enter without a visa: Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Republic of the Sahara, Seychelles, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen.
