South Korea is introducing a digital nomad visa that will allow foreigners to live and work in the country. From January 1, 2024, the government will issue a visa that will allow people to take a vacation without taking time off work. This digital visa will allow foreigners to work remotely in South Korea for two years. It will also provide the opportunity to bring family to South Korea.
Commenting on the initiative, the Ministry of Justice said that the introduction of the new digital nomad visa will allow foreigners to combine work and vacation in South Korea more conveniently. Previously, foreign nationals working remotely had to apply for a tourist visa or stay in the country for no longer than 90 days. With the new visa, however, these citizens can stay longer in South Korea.
The digital nomad visa allows foreigners to work for a foreign company from South Korea for one year. After this period, an extension of the visa for a further year can be applied for. To qualify for this visa, you must be over 18 years old and have at least one year of experience in your field. In addition, to qualify for the visa, you must be able to prove an annual income of approximately $65,860, have no criminal record and provide a certificate of employment. Health insurance for the entire stay is also required.
Foreigners staying in South Korea on a short-term visa can also apply for a digital nomad visa, provided they meet all the requirements. However, this visa does not entitle the holder to work in South Korea. A work visa is required to work in the country. The new digital nomad visa will first be tested and then the authorities will decide whether to make it permanent.
