The Gambia: Current Travel and Safety Information (as of September 2026)

Since September 8, 2026, there have been repeated, sometimes violent protests in the greater Banjul area, including in Serekunda, Brufut, and near the seat of government, “State House.” These protests have been triggered by prolonged and widespread power outages in the region. According to recent reports, tear gas has also been used during these demonstrations. Travelers planning a trip to The Gambia or already in the country should closely monitor the situation and consistently avoid large crowds and demonstrations.

To maintain public order, official checkpoints have been set up nationwide, particularly in the capital, Banjul, and its surrounding areas. These checkpoints can cause significant traffic delays, which should be factored into travel plans, especially when traveling to the airport or between locations. It should also be noted that the next presidential election in The Gambia is scheduled for December 5, 2026—in the run-up to such elections, the domestic political situation may become even more tense.

Even aside from the current protests, general caution regarding crime is advised in The Gambia. Pickpocketing and purse snatching occur primarily in the greater Serekunda area and in the coastal region—for example, on unguarded stretches of beach, at markets, in bars, and on ferries—sometimes accompanied by threats of violence. Travelers should avoid walking at night, especially on the beach; keep valuables and documents secure; and be particularly vigilant in large crowds. In tourist areas, there is also an increase in fraud attempts involving fake romantic relationships or promises of marriage, which often aim to extort money or secure an invitation to apply for a visa.

There have been no terrorist attacks in The Gambia to date; however, given the general security situation in West Africa, such a risk cannot be completely ruled out. Travelers should be aware of the latent danger, remain alert—especially in crowded places and at large events—and follow the instructions of local security forces.

In terms of climate, The Gambia is currently still at the end of the rainy season, which lasts from about June through October and can be accompanied by flooding and tropical storms. As a result, remote parts of the country may be difficult to reach at times. When entering or exiting the country via Banjul International Airport, a security fee of 20 USD or 20 EUR is also required, payable in cash on site—a detail that should be factored into your travel budget.
