Canada suspends startup visa and prepares new program for entrepreneurs
Canada has announced the suspension of the Start-Up Visa program and the cessation of accepting new applications for work visas for startups. According to the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC), the issuance of new work permits under the SUV program is stopped immediately, and the acceptance of most applications for the visa itself will be completed after December 31, 2025.
The decision was made against the backdrop of the overcrowding of business immigration programs and is aimed at reducing queues. Priority is now given to applicants who are already in Canada and extending existing work permits. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs who received a certificate from an authorized organization in 2025 will be able to apply later, despite the general closure of the program.
The authorities plan to replace the Start-Up Visa with a new pilot program for entrepreneurs, scheduled to launch in 2026. It is expected to be more specifically targeted at investors and business founders capable of driving economic growth and creating jobs, as well as offering a more manageable and effective pathway to permanent residency.
