Ukraine: Travel Advisory Remains in Effect – Security Situation and Entry Requirements (as of August 5, 2026)

As of August 5, 2026: An explicit travel warning remains in effect for Ukraine. This is due to the ongoing hostilities in the country, which are concentrated primarily in the east and south but could affect virtually all parts of the country. Russian airstrikes involving missiles, cruise missiles, and drones occur almost daily. Even in western regions such as Volhynia, Lviv, or Transcarpathia, where the intensity and frequency of attacks are lower, a residual risk remains from long-range weapons and falling debris.

It is particularly important for travelers and visa applicants to note: The airspace over Ukraine is completely closed. Entry into and exit from the country are currently possible only by land. Nighttime curfews are in effect in Kyiv and other locations, and these may change at short notice depending on the security situation. Anyone who is still in the country or planning a trip that cannot be postponed should strictly observe local announcements and curfews and familiarize themselves in advance with the locations of shelters and air raid alert apps.

The situation is further exacerbated by the danger of unexploded ordnance throughout the country, as well as by sea mines in coastal regions. In areas previously controlled by Russian troops and since recaptured, the danger posed by mines and booby traps is particularly high. The oblasts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson were annexed by Russia in 2022—an annexation that is not recognized internationally. Under international law, these areas remain part of Ukraine, but are in some cases effectively under Russian control, which makes entry there even more difficult and dangerous.

Consular services are also limited: Embassy missions can currently perform their duties only to a limited extent, and some consular offices remain closed. Anyone who must nevertheless travel to Ukraine for urgent professional or personal reasons should be aware of the considerable risk and have a carefully developed safety plan in place. It should also be noted that, since the general mobilization, male Ukrainian citizens between the ages of 23 and 60 are generally not permitted to leave the country—regardless of any other nationalities they may hold.
