India plans to introduce significantly simpler visa application forms starting in 2027
According to a November 3, 2026, report in the Indian newspaper *The Hindu*, India is preparing a comprehensive overhaul of its visa application forms. According to several government officials, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has already held several meetings to further simplify the country’s visa requirements. The goal is to make the application process faster and less complicated for international travelers by removing information that is superfluous or poorly tailored to foreign applicants.
Specifically, the number of fields to be filled out on the application forms could be reduced by about 70%. According to a senior government official, the planned reform would affect all 22 existing visa categories and bring the forms more in line with international standards, while eliminating repetitive or redundant questions. Currently, filling out an application for an electronic visa (e-visa) for India can involve up to nine pages of information—in addition to personal data and travel plans, applicants must also answer questions about background information, such as possible involvement in criminal activities, terrorism, espionage, or political violence.
Important for travelers: As things stand, the security checks themselves are expected to remain unchanged. Rather, the reform focuses on administrative fields that are considered unnecessary or difficult to complete. One example is the “district” field, which is often difficult for applicants from countries with different administrative structures to fill out and could therefore be eliminated. The requirement to provide a local address in India could also be relaxed, making it easier for tourists to enter the address of their hotel or lodging in the future.
According to officials cited by The Hindu, the revised forms could be introduced in 2027, though a specific date has not yet been set. For travelers planning a trip to India, this does not mean any immediate change for the time being—the current application procedures will remain in effect until the reform is officially implemented.
Until the simplified forms are introduced, it remains particularly important to fill out the application documents carefully and completely to avoid delays. We assist travelers in selecting the appropriate visa category and submitting their application correctly—whether it’s an e-visa for India, a tourist visa for India, or a business visa for India. Should the process indeed be simplified as announced, we will, of course, inform our customers of all relevant changes and adjust the process accordingly.
