Liberia Introduces Mandatory Health Declaration and Stricter Entry Controls
Stricter health requirements have been in effect for travelers entering Liberia since October 21, 2026. The Liberian Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), has issued a new directive titled “Travel Advisory No. 02 on the Threat of an Ebola Outbreak,” which significantly strengthens health monitoring at the country’s borders. This is due to concerns about a renewed outbreak of the Ebola virus in the region.
Specifically, this means that all travelers wishing to enter Liberia are now required to complete a health declaration form. This form can be filled out online, after which travelers will receive a QR code that must be presented upon arrival. In addition, all travelers entering the country must undergo a health screening at the airport or border crossing.
This particularly affects individuals who have been in certain African countries in recent weeks where there is an increased risk of Ebola—including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and other countries in the region. For these travelers, the guidelines provide for additional measures that go beyond the standard health declaration and include stricter controls upon entry.
One of the most far-reaching regulations concerns self-quarantine: Anyone who has recently been in a country classified as a high-risk area must self-quarantine for 21 days after entering Liberia. This measure is based on the known incubation period of the Ebola virus and is intended to contain any potential spread at an early stage. Travelers planning a trip to Liberia who have previously visited one of the affected countries should be sure to take this requirement into account when planning their trip.
