Study, attend school or cultural training in India

A student visa is a prerequisite for an educational stay in India. This type of entry permit is not only issued to students and pupils enrolled at Indian schools or universities. The Indian diplomatic missions in Germany also issue student visas to applicants who are studying yoga, Indian dance or Vedic culture in India. The prerequisite is that the training institution is recognized by the state. Please select the visa type "Student visa" in our booking mask for the destination country India if your travel intention matches one of the above-mentioned further education options.

Semester abroad and AISEC

The visa gives university students the opportunity to spend a semester abroad or even an entire degree course in India. A Study Abroad is an unforgettable, authentic experience with the chance to get to know the country, its people and the extraordinary Indian culture intensively.

Student visas are not provided for travellers who participate in a project of AIESEC, the largest international student organization, in India. In these cases, an Indian business visa is the right choice. Those who are involved in social projects require a so-called entry visa.

Electronic student visas

To facilitate higher education for international students and their dependents, India has introduced two new specialized visas: the e-student visa ( e-student ) and the e-student-x visa (e-student-x).

The e-student visa (e-student) is intended for foreign nationals pursuing full-time undergraduate, master's, doctoral and other academic programs.

The electronic student visa-x (e-student-x) is designed for dependents who accompany e-student visa holders. This visa will allow them to stay close to the student throughout the study period, providing the necessary support during the study process.

The maximum validity of these visas is 5 years, renewable within India. Students will be able to enter through any authorized immigration control point.

How long is the visa valid for study purposes?

The study visa for India is valid for the period for which the foreign visitor is admitted to the school, university or training center. For example, if a course only lasts three months, the participant will receive an entry permit for this period. If a student is studying abroad for three years, the visa is valid for a correspondingly longer period. The maximum total length of stay is limited to 5 years.

What do I need to consider when applying for a visa and in India?

Applicants require an invitation or a letter from the Indian institution that provides information about the duration and funding of the planned studies. The information provided by the educational institution determines the period of validity of the student visa for India.

Pupils, students and participants in further education courses are obliged to register within 14 days of arrival, regardless of the intended duration of their stay.

A student visa does not entitle you to work in India. However, paid internships are allowed if they are part of a study programme.
