Digitalization of Schengen visas: a step into the future
The European Union has decided to move to a fully digital system for applying for Schengen visas. This innovation, expected by 2028, promises to significantly simplify the visa acquisition process for travelers.
What will change?
- Replacement of visa stickers: traditional visa stickers will be replaced with secure encrypted two-dimensional barcodes.
- Simplifying the process: applicants will be able to submit documents and track the status of their applications online, as well as pay fees through a digital platform.
- Receiving a visa: after a successful application, travelers will receive a visa with a unique barcode and digital signature.
For those visiting Europe for the first time, personal submission of biometric data at consulates will be required, while the visa acquisition process for repeat applicants will be significantly simplified. If the applicant plans to visit several Schengen area countries, the system will automatically determine which EU member state will process their application based on the duration of stay. Additionally, applicants will have the opportunity to specify in which EU member state they would prefer their application to be considered, depending on the purpose of the trip.
The advantages of the new system are clear: the digitalization of the EU visa policy will make the visa acquisition process more accessible, cheaper, and faster, and the introduction of modern technologies will enhance the security and efficiency of visa application processing. After the full implementation of the system, travelers will be able to scan barcodes at border control points, providing immigration service employees access to their personal data and visa information through a centralized EU database.
This innovation represents an important step towards improving visa policy and adapting to the modern requirements of travelers.
