Chad Will Lift Visa Requirements for All Africans Effective January 1, 2027

Chad is preparing to significantly open its borders to travelers from across the African continent. Starting January 1, 2027, citizens of all African countries will no longer need a visa to enter Chad. This decision was announced on July 15, 2026, by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno during the opening of the African Water Forum in N'Djamena. The president stated that Chad would “open its borders and abolish the visa requirement for entry for all Africans effective January 1, 2027.”

What the announcement means in concrete terms

The President’s statement refers to citizens of all African countries, regardless of their nationality. President Déby Itno presented the decision as a further step toward African integration and the free movement of people on the continent. In his speech, he described Chad as a hub connecting West Africa, East Africa, and the northern and southern parts of the continent. It is important to note, however, that the announced regulation applies exclusively to entry visas. It does not automatically mean that travelers from African countries are permitted to work, settle permanently, or engage in professional activities in Chad without additional authorization.

Unresolved Questions Regarding Practical Implementation

The effective date was clearly specified as January 1, 2027, but numerous practical details have yet to be published by the Chadian authorities. The President’s speech did not provide information on the maximum duration of a visa-free stay, the accepted travel documents, any requirements for prior registration, the conditions for minors, or the rules for business travel. Existing Exemptions for Individual Countries

The announced reform expands an exemption that already applies to citizens of several African countries. Currently, nationals of Benin, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, The Gambia, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Togo are exempt from the visa requirement for entry into Chad. Citizens of other African countries must continue to comply with the current entry requirements until the new visa exemption is formally implemented.
