Myanmar: Travel and Safety Information – Current Situation for Travelers

Following the elections held by the military in December 2025 and January 2026, the security situation in Myanmar remains extremely tense. Although the elections proceeded largely peacefully in the major cities, a lasting resolution to the conflicts—some of which have been ongoing for decades—is not to be expected, as pro-democracy and ethnic opposition groups were excluded from the election. According to estimates, opposition forces continue to control approximately 40 percent of the country. Against this backdrop, travelers are still strongly advised against traveling to Myanmar.

Outside the regions of Yangon, Naypyidaw, and Ayeyarwaddy, as well as the city of Mandalay, armed clashes—including artillery and air strikes—are occurring in large parts of the country, affecting the civilian population as well. Even in areas not directly affected by the civil war, security force operations and roadblocks are part of everyday life. Explosive attacks and violent clashes must be expected nationwide, with military and government facilities being prime targets. Restaurants, hotels, and shops associated with the military regime are also considered at risk. Arbitrary arrests, including of foreign nationals, cannot be ruled out, nor can a further escalation of the situation, particularly around national holidays and anniversaries.

Important information regarding entry: The international airport in Yangon is currently open and served by numerous international and domestic flights; however, travelers should expect delays in booking as well as last-minute flight cancellations or rescheduling. Entry and exit by land or sea are currently not possible in principle. Special caution is advised regarding the mandatory military service introduced in 2024: Men between the ages of 18 and 35 (up to age 45 for those with special qualifications) and women between the ages of 18 and 27 (up to age 35 for those with special qualifications) may be required to perform military service for up to 24 months. This explicitly applies to individuals with dual citizenship as well. There are indications that conscripts are not permitted to leave the country. Anyone who could potentially be affected by this regulation should urgently refrain from traveling to Myanmar.

Travelers who, despite the existing travel warning, must travel to Myanmar for unavoidable professional reasons are advised to be aware of the significant risks, particularly outside of Yangon, and to have a carefully planned safety strategy in place. This includes, among other things, comprehensive precautions in the event of an unplanned extension of their stay, such as powers of attorney for personal and professional matters. In addition, travelers are advised to remain in safe locations at all times, avoid overland travel, steer clear of areas under martial law and demonstrations, and stay informed through local and international media.
