Is a visa required for Oman?

A visa is a permit document allowing a foreign national to temporarily reside in the territory of a state. Most foreign nationals require a visa to visit Oman. However, there are exceptions for citizens of 103 countries who can enter without a visa for stays of up to 14 days.

Oman has currently ceased issuing visas on arrival and replaced them with e-visas. Therefore, it is recommended to apply in advance, regardless of whether the visa is electronic or traditional. But if you are a citizen of a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country, you can obtain a visa on arrival by filling out a paper form at the border.

Electronic visa
  • Issued online before the trip
  • Allows multiple entries within a year
  • Usually up to 30 days stay for tourism with the possibility of extension
  • Application processing from 3-5 days
  • Available for citizens of most countries
Visa on arrival

  • Duration of stay up to 14 days without extension
  • Issuance on the spot
  • Available only for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries

Electronic visa

In 2018, the Sultanate of Oman launched an electronic visa (eVisa) program to simplify and speed up the process of their issuance without the need to visit an embassy or consulate. The electronic visa allows temporary stay in the country as a tourist and is issued to citizens of about 220 countries around the world, including EU countries. After submitting an online application and its processing within a certain time, an electronic entry document is issued.

There are different types of electronic visas in Oman:

  • A single-entry visa for 28 days for residents of the Persian Gulf countries, 30 days or 3 months, valid for one year.
  • A multiple-entry visa for 30 days, valid for one year, allowing multiple entries.
  • A transit visa for 5 days for residents of the Gulf countries.

It is important to carefully study the rules and conditions for using a specific type of electronic visa.

Passport

Long-term visa

For long-term stay or temporary/permanent residence in Oman, a long-term visa is required. It is issued for various purposes: work, study, business opening, family reunification.

In some countries, a short-term tourist visa is first obtained, and then a residence permit is obtained upon arrival in Oman. The procedure for obtaining may vary depending on the country of residence of the applicant, his nationality, and the visa policy of the embassy.

The long-term visa allows entry into the country and submission of documents for a residence permit, remaining in the status of a potential resident until a final decision is received.

To get more detailed information about long-term visas, it is recommended to contact us.

Airplane takeoff

Transit visa

There are special rules for transiting through airports in Oman. If the transfer lasts less than 6 hours, a visa is not required. But if more than 6 hours, it may be necessary to obtain a transit or guest tourist visa.

The requirements depend on the applicant's nationality, the duration of the transit, and other factors. It is recommended to clarify the need for a visa with the airline in advance and apply if necessary.

Family on vacation

Short-term visa

If you cannot obtain an electronic visa, there is an option to obtain a traditional short-term visa for temporary stay in Oman. It can be obtained for various purposes: tourism, visiting relatives/friends, business trips, participation in congresses/exhibitions, cultural/scientific/sports events, short-term training or work.

An application form is required, along with a passport, photo, confirmation of hotel reservation/invitation from Oman, and payment of the visa fee.

Who needs to get a visa to Oman?

Preparing for a trip to Oman requires special attention to visa regulations, especially for citizens of countries subject to visa restrictions. The government of Oman periodically makes changes that require citizens of certain countries and regions to obtain a visa in advance, even for short-term visits.

A visa-free regime allows citizens from a list of 103 countries and territories to enter Oman and stay there without a visa for up to 14 days. This requires compliance with a number of criteria, including advance accommodation booking, valid medical insurance, and return tickets.

An electronic visa is available to citizens of about 220 countries, including EU countries. There is also an opportunity for individuals with residency in the Persian Gulf countries or valid documents issued by Schengen Agreement states, the USA, the UK, Australia, and Canada.

For those who cannot use an electronic visa, we will help to arrange a standard visa through the consulate or embassy. It is important to regularly check the current visa regime of Oman for your country and ensure that your documents fully meet the requirements.

Duration and validity of visa in Oman

The duration of stay and the validity of the visa in Oman depend on the type of visa obtained, the purpose of the visit, the duration of the planned stay, and the visitor's nationality.

Visitors who have obtained an electronic visa can stay in Oman for tourism or business trips for up to 30 days. An electronic visa can be either single-entry or multiple-entry. A single-entry electronic visa typically has a validity of 1 month with the possibility of staying in the country for up to 30 days. A multiple-entry electronic visa issued for a year allows multiple trips to Oman, with each stay not exceeding 30 days.

For longer stays in Oman for predefined purposes such as work, study, or family reunion, special long-term visas are required. The validity and conditions of stay for such visas are determined individually according to their type and the documents provided.

The validity of the visa can be 90, 180, or 365 days, which means that during this period you can enter and leave Oman. However, the maximum duration of stay in the country should not exceed 30 days per entry.

Thus, for successful planning of a trip to Oman, it is necessary to carefully study the requirements for the type of visa that best suits your plans for staying, as well as to clarify the terms of its validity and the permitted duration of stay.
