The US is reducing the validity of visas for Nigerians from five years to three months.
Starting July 2025, the rules for obtaining American visas for Nigerian citizens have changed. Now, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas are issued only in a single-entry format and are valid for no more than three months. This was reported by the US Missions in Nigeria, emphasizing that the new policy applies to all new applications.
The information was confirmed by Reuters, noting that Nigerians applying for non-immigrant visas to travel to the United States will be granted entry for only three months and only once.
Previously, Nigerian citizens could count on multiple visas with a validity period of up to five years. The innovation has become a serious tightening of conditions. According to media reports, the measures are related to the reciprocity policy that the US applies to countries, determining visa rules based on similar requirements for Americans.
The changes took effect in July 2025. Meanwhile, visas issued before July 8 retain their validity under the previous conditions. Thus, from the middle of summer, most new non-immigrant visas for Nigerians have become single-use and short-term, reflecting an adjustment in the visa regime as part of general diplomatic practice.
