Thailand: from January 2025, visas can be obtained online
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Marita Sangiemphong, announced that starting from January 1, 2025, foreign citizens will be able to apply for all types of visas to Thailand through an electronic system (e-visa), which will be available at 94 embassies and consulates of the kingdom worldwide.
To apply for an electronic visa, it is necessary to fill out a form and attach scans of the required documents. After the approval, the e-visa will be issued in electronic format, replacing traditional passport stamps or stickers. The visa can be saved and presented upon entry into the country.
It is important to note that the visa-free entry policy and visas on arrival will remain unchanged. Travelers from 93 countries will continue to enjoy visa-free entry for up to 60 days, and citizens of 31 countries will be able to apply for a visa on arrival. However, those planning a longer stay in Thailand for business or study purposes will need to apply through the electronic system.
This online portal represents a significant update to the visa process in the country, aimed at simplifying and expediting visa issuance for foreign citizens. The innovation will reduce paperwork and improve the screening of individuals entering Thailand by integrating databases with other government agencies. It is expected that the updated visa policy will attract more tourists and business travelers, contributing to the country's economic development.
