Nigeria introduces new visa policy: e-visas and digital arrival cards for travelers from around the world
Nigeria is modernizing its visa policy by introducing innovative solutions such as a new system of electronic visas and digital arrival and departure cards.
This initiative is aimed at reducing waiting times at border points, optimizing border control, and enhancing the security of international travelers.
As part of the new strategy, Nigeria is abandoning the outdated on-arrival visa system and has introduced a fully digital platform e-Visa starting May 1, 2025. Also, traditional paper forms previously required for entry and exit are now being replaced with digital arrival and departure cards. International travelers, except Nigerian citizens, must fill out the card online before boarding the arrival or departure flight.
The on-arrival visa issuance process will no longer be in effect, as it has officially been discontinued with the introduction of the electronic visa system. However, visas issued under the old scheme will remain valid until May 30, 2025. Electronic visas will allow stays in Nigeria for 30-90 days, depending on the applicant's nationality and type of visa. It is important to note that electronic visa extensions are not possible and must be processed only through embassies.
The new e-Visa system offers the possibility of issuing 13 different types of visas, including business, tourism, family visits, transit, and short-term study, allowing to meet the needs of travelers.
The process is quite simple: applicants fill out an online form, upload the necessary documents including passport and hotel booking confirmations, pay the fees, and receive the visa via email.
Travelers who have obtained approved electronic visas will be able to enter Nigeria through international airports equipped with electronic gates. Such airports include:
- Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja)
- Murtala Mohammed International Airport (Lagos)
- Port Harcourt International Airport (Port Harcourt)
- Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (Kano)
- Margaret Ekpo International Airport (Calabar)
- Akanu Ibiam International Airport (Enugu)
The digital system will be linked to visa data and automatically apply penalties for violations. Violators who fail to comply with the rules will receive a five-year entry ban, and exceeding the stay by one year or more will lead to permanent blacklisting.
The initiative to introduce an electronic visa and digital arrival card in Nigeria represents not only convenience but also a strategic step aimed at stimulating the country's economic growth and securing its borders.
