Laos Temporarily Extends the Validity of the E-Visa from 60 to 180 Days

Since April 2026, travelers applying for an e-visa for Laos have been granted a significantly longer period in which to enter the country. As indicated in the approval letters from the Laotian authorities, the standard validity period of the e-visa approval has been temporarily extended from 60 to 180 days. This measure was still in effect as recently as September 2026, as confirmed by newly issued approvals.

Official notifications to applicants first state the standard rule: The standard validity period of a Lao e-visa is 60 days from the date of approval. This is followed by a note stating that, in light of current travel conditions in certain regions, a temporary exception has been introduced that extends this period to 180 days. Specifically, this means that an e-visa for Laos covered by this regulation can be used to enter the country up to 180 days after approval—instead of the usual 60 days.

It is important for travelers to clearly distinguish between the entry period and the actual length of stay. The extended validity applies exclusively to the period during which the visa can be used to enter the country. The actual permitted length of stay in Laos remains unaffected and is still limited to 30 days. Therefore, anyone who receives an e-visa valid for 180 days can freely choose when to begin their trip within this extended time frame, but must still observe the regular 30-day limit after entering the country.

The Laotian authorities expressly emphasize the temporary nature of this regulation. The approval letters state, in essence, that the measure may be reviewed at any time and adjusted without prior notice. No specific end date has been announced yet, so travelers should not assume that the extended period will remain in effect permanently.

In practice, this offers a clear advantage for travel planning: Those who apply for their e-visa early no longer need to tie their exact entry date so closely to the application date as was required under the previous 60-day rule. This provides greater flexibility, for example, if travel dates change at short notice or if multiple destinations in the region are to be combined. At the same time, it remains advisable not to submit the application unnecessarily far in advance as long as it is unclear how long the current relaxation will remain in effect.

Since requirements and deadlines for e-visa regulations can change at short notice, it is recommended to process the application through an experienced service provider who stays up to date on the current regulations. We handle the entire visa application process for Laos on behalf of travelers and also assess which other options—such as the Laos tourist visa—may be suitable depending on the purpose of the trip. This allows travelers to make the most of the currently more generous validity period when planning their trip, without losing track of the applicable entry and stay regulations.
