Kenya: Mandatory Health Insurance for Travelers Takes Shape

Kenya is continuing to move forward with preparations for mandatory travel health insurance for foreign visitors. In a special edition of the Kenya Gazette dated July 30, 2026, the government has now formally established the minimum coverage that a future insurance policy for travelers must include. The corresponding notice was signed by the Kenyan Minister of Health and sets a cumulative minimum coverage amount of $50,000.

Important for travelers: This publication does not mean that, effective immediately, every visitor must present proof of insurance before departure or upon entry. Rather, it represents another step in establishing the legal and administrative framework for this program. Officials have not yet announced a specific date for the practical implementation of the mandatory insurance requirement.

Minimum Coverage of $50,000 in Detail

The published list of benefits specifies the minimum coverage that future travel health insurance must provide:

• $20,000 for medical treatment costs;
• $25,000 for emergency medical evacuation;
• $300 for prescription medications;
• $1,000 for psychological care;
• $5,000 for the repatriation of remains.

The total of $50,000 represents the minimum level of coverage that the policy must provide. The actual costs travelers will incur to purchase this insurance have not yet been announced. The announcement also clarifies that coverage may only be offered by insurers that are authorized and licensed under Kenyan insurance law.

The legal basis has been in place since 2023

The concept of mandatory travel health insurance for travelers entering the country is not fundamentally new. The Social Health Insurance Act, passed in 2023, already provided for a corresponding regulation for non-citizens residing in Kenya. The notice now published specifies this legal requirement for the first time with clear figures on minimum benefits.
