Cambodia: Travel advisory for the border region with Thailand remains in effect

A partial travel warning remains in effect for Cambodia regarding the border area with Thailand, specifically a strip of about 20 kilometers on both sides of the border. This is due to military clashes that have resulted in deaths and injuries in several provinces bordering Thailand since July 2025. Although a ceasefire was agreed upon at the end of December 2025, the security situation in the border region remains tense and uncertain. A renewed escalation is possible at any time, and all border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain closed until further notice.

The provinces of Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey are particularly affected by this warning. In these areas, unexploded ordnance may pose an additional danger, in some cases even beyond the immediate border zone. Travelers should be aware that security forces in this region may view certain behaviors—such as taking photographs—as suspicious, which could lead to disproportionate reactions. It is therefore strongly recommended to refrain from taking photographs throughout the entire border area with Thailand, even outside the zone directly affected by the warning.

Anyone planning a trip to Cambodia should consistently avoid demonstrations and large gatherings of people and stay informed about the current situation through local and international media both before and during the trip. It is essential to follow the instructions of local security forces. Even in the area of well-known temple complexes, travelers are advised not to stray from the marked paths, as there may still be a risk of landmines in some parts of the country outside major urban centers—even though the main tourist areas are considered to have been cleared.

In addition to the situation in the border region with Thailand, attention is also drawn to crime in tourist centers such as Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Kampot. There have been isolated incidents of assaults on foreigners, particularly in tourist and residential areas. In Phnom Penh, this includes, among other areas, the area along the banks of the Tonle Sap River and the Boeng Keng Kang 1 neighborhood. In addition, there have been reports of thefts in guesthouses and hotels in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, so valuables should be secured accordingly.

Most travelers need a valid visa to enter Cambodia. Those planning a tourist trip can conveniently apply for a Cambodia Tourist e-Visa in advance, while business travelers can apply for an appropriate Cambodia Business Visa. In addition to the visa, electronic registration is often required upon entry, which is handled via the Cambodia e-Arrival Card. We’ll handle the entire application process for you and review all necessary documents to ensure your trip goes smoothly.

Given the volatile situation in the border region with Thailand, it is advisable to adjust your itinerary accordingly and avoid trips to the affected provinces. Those who are nevertheless traveling in regions near the border should be particularly vigilant and stay informed about current developments, as the security situation can change at short notice. For all other parts of Cambodia, including the popular temple complexes of Angkor, the general precautions against crime—as are customary in many countries with heavy tourist traffic—apply.
