Japan to Drastically Increase Visa Fees Starting July 1, 2026

On July 1, 2026, Japan will significantly increase visa issuance fees. This decision marks the first adjustment to visa fees since 1978. The cost of a single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while the fees for multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.

This drastic increase in fees was approved by the Japanese government on June 19, 2026. The measure takes effect on July 1, 2026, and applies to all applications submitted on or after that date. The adjustment reflects changes in prices and exchange rates that have occurred since the fees were last updated in 1978.

For German travelers wishing to visit Japan, this means that the cost of a tourist visa for Japan will increase significantly. The new fees are set in yen but can be paid in the respective local currency at Japanese embassies and consulates.

The increase in visa fees comes alongside Japan’s efforts to digitize entry procedures. The JESTA system, which enables electronic travel authorizations for visa-free short-term stays, is part of this digitization. Although no specific instructions have yet been provided regarding the application of the new fees to online applications, it is expected that electronic visas will also be affected by the increase.

Despite the increase, the Japanese government does not anticipate any immediate negative impact on tourism. Japan remains an attractive travel destination, and visitor numbers have rebounded strongly in recent years. For travelers planning a trip to Japan, it is important to be aware of the costs involved and to make the necessary arrangements well in advance.
