JESTA in Japan: what it is and how to get it

JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) — is a pre-authorization electronic system for entry into Japan, which is used for citizens of certain countries planning short-term visa-free trips. It was introduced by the Japanese government to simplify the entry of tourists, increase security, and reduce airport control time.

What you need to know:

• JESTA is only valid for one trip;
• Does not grant the right to work, study or long-term stay;
• Without JESTA approval, you will not be able to board the plane, even if the country is on the visa-free list.

According to current information as of July 2025, JESTA will be necessary for citizens of countries participating in visa-free entry to Japan. The current list includes 71 countries:

It is recommended to apply no later than 72 hours before departure. In most cases, a decision is made within a few hours, but sometimes the system may request additional data.

At the moment, the following documents and information have been identified that may be needed for the application. Please note: the list may be updated closer to the official launch of the system.

• Passport, valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry;
• Confirmation of flight ticket reservation;
• Address of residence in Japan (e.g., hotel or inviting party);
• Contact details (phone, e-mail);
• Information about the trip: dates of stay, intended itinerary;
• Access to email for confirmation and notifications.

As of July 2025, the cost of processing JESTA has not yet been established. Closer to the launch date of the system, the Japanese government will announce the official price, and we will definitely inform about it on our website.
