Japan accelerates launch of JESTA system - entry to the country will change as early as 2028
Japan has officially announced a change in the launch date of the new electronic entry permit system — JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization). It was originally planned to introduce the system by 2030, but now it is expected to be fully operational by 2028. This decision was made against the backdrop of an increase in the flow of foreign tourists and the need to strengthen border control.
JESTA will be analogous to the American ESTA and will be mandatory for citizens of countries with a visa-free regime. Travelers will need to fill out an online questionnaire in advance, indicating personal data, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and place of residence. Without an approved JESTA JAPAN permit, boarding a flight to Japan may be impossible.
Why JESTA is being introduced
The system is aimed at:
- Strengthening border control and identifying potential risks before the traveler's arrival.
- Reducing illegal immigration — as of January 2025, there were more than 79,000 illegal immigrants in Japan.
- Simplifying entry for bona fide tourists: automation will simplify control and reduce queues at airports.
After the launch of the system, submitting an application will become mandatory for citizens of 71 countries participating in the visa-free entry program to Japan. You can find the complete and up-to-date list of states on the JESTA page on our website.
How will the JESTA processing take place?
The preliminary process of submitting an application will look as follows:
- Fill out the questionnaire online with personal and tourist information;
- Attach passport data and itinerary;
- Pay the registration fee (the exact amount will be announced later);
- Receive the electronic permit before departing to Japan.
