Update on Germany's immigration policy: new rules on family reunification and citizenship
Germany has announced major changes in its immigration policy aimed at strengthening control over migration flows and increasing requirements for citizenship applicants.
According to the new rules, migrants with additional protection status will be deprived of the right to family reunification for up to two years. Unlike fully recognized refugees, individuals in this category are temporarily protected from returning to their countries due to serious threats but do not have refugee status in accordance with the Geneva Convention. Such a change may negatively affect family relationships and long-term plans.
Also the minimum residency period for obtaining citizenship has been increased from three to five years, highlighting the government's desire for more careful selection of candidates. Future citizens are now required to demonstrate not only financial independence and stable employment but also proficient language skills.
The government explains these measures as necessary to reduce the burden on national infrastructure associated with the reception and integration of migrants. This creates certain difficulties for those dreaming of a new life in Germany.
It is expected that the new policy will be officially approved by the start of the summer holidays in July 2025. In the meantime, migrants and legal residents must prepare for a longer wait, strict control, and limited flexibility in the process of resolving their situations.
