Solomon Islands Officially Launch New Electronic Visa System

On September 7, 2026, the Solomon Islands government officially confirmed that the country’s new electronic visa system is fully operational. Following the activation of the online payment feature on August 22, 2026, the entire application and approval process has now been digitized. For travelers, this means that visa applications for the Solomon Islands can now be submitted, processed, and approved entirely online, without the need to appear in person at a diplomatic mission.

The reform is administered by the Immigration Division of the Solomon Islands’ Ministry of Trade, Industry, Labor, and Immigration and is based on the new Border Management System (BMS), which has been gradually rolled out at the country’s border checkpoints over the past few months. The legal basis is Section 92(1) of the Immigration Act 2012, under which the authorities have authorized an electronic system for the submission and processing of visa applications. Decisions made through this system are legally considered decisions of an authorized immigration officer.

Effective immediately, tourists and other travelers who require a visa must submit their application via the digital process prior to entry. The categories available electronically include, among others, visitor visas and business visas, as well as certain special and exceptional categories. According to an official announcement, the transition is intended to strengthen border security while making travel to the Solomon Islands easier and more efficient.

Since all steps—from submitting the application to making the payment and receiving a decision—now take place on a single platform, errors and delays that frequently occurred with paper-based or inconsistent procedures can be reduced.
