Nepal: Current Travel and Safety Information for Tourists (as of July 2026)

The travel and safety advisories for Nepal were updated as of July 9, 2026. This update was prompted by changes in the domestic political situation as well as editorial revisions. Travelers and visa applicants planning a trip to Nepal should take a close look at the current assessments, as the security situation in the country has changed significantly in recent months.

In September 2025, Nepal witnessed severe clashes between security forces and demonstrators, resulting in numerous deaths and serious injuries. However, following the resignation of the government at the time and new elections in March 2026, the situation in the country has noticeably calmed down. Nevertheless, it should be noted that a further change in the security situation cannot be completely ruled out. Travelers are therefore advised to stay informed about the current situation before and during their trip and to follow instructions from local security forces.

There is currently no specific threat of terrorism. Nevertheless, it is recommended to remain vigilant in crowded places and at large events and to avoid large gatherings of people whenever possible. This general caution applies in particular to regions heavily frequented by tourists, where many travelers are present.

With regard to crime, particular attention is drawn to petty crime such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, which occur especially in tourist areas. Experience shows that such offenses increase during the festival season from September through November. More serious offenses, such as burglaries, are also reported. Trekking tourists traveling alone should be especially vigilant: In the past, there have been isolated cases of assaults, and women traveling alone have been victims of violent crimes. It is therefore recommended that trekking tours and longer hikes not be undertaken alone, but rather in groups and through reputable travel agencies.

Another issue concerns extortion attempts by criminal groups targeting organizations, businesspeople, and individuals, with these groups sometimes using violence to enforce their demands. Trekking travelers may also occasionally be targeted by so-called “donation extortion attempts”—a guide familiar with the area can help de-escalate such situations. In tourist areas, it is advisable to contact the Tourist Police if in doubt, as state security forces often have only limited knowledge of foreign languages. Travelers are generally advised to be cooperative and patient with security forces and to avoid confrontational discussions.

General precautions also apply to daily life in the country: Important documents such as ID cards and passports should be kept in a safe place and, ideally, digitally copied to facilitate the issuance of replacement documents in case of loss. Cashless payments are strongly recommended; avoid carrying unnecessary valuables or flashy jewelry. Exercise particular vigilance in crowded places such as airports, markets, and on public transportation, as well as—especially for women—after dark.
