Bangladesh: Current Safety Advice for Travelers (as of August 2026)
As of August 2026, there are several important safety advisories in effect for travel to Bangladesh that should be taken into account when planning a trip and applying for a visa. There remains a risk of terrorist attacks in the country, which may also target foreigners or locations popular with international visitors. Extra vigilance is recommended in crowded public places and after Friday prayers. Travelers should avoid large crowds, vary their routes, and ensure that adequate security measures are in place at hotels and restaurants.
The domestic political situation has changed significantly in recent years: Nationwide protests in August 2024, which led to the resignation of the then-head of government, were initially followed by an interim government. Parliamentary elections were held in February 2026, and a new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has taken office. Despite this political consolidation, demonstrations may still occur, sometimes in connection with international conflicts. Travelers should stay informed about the current situation before and during their stay and avoid crowds and foreseeable demonstrations.
Particular caution is advised in the border region with Myanmar, which should be avoided over a wide area due to ongoing clashes between the military and insurgents; the land border is closed in any case. The Chittagong Hill Tracts region, particularly the districts of Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban, is also considered sensitive: demonstrations and armed incidents may occur there, and travel is only permitted with prior official authorization. The security situation in the reception camps for Rohingya refugees is also rated as poor; visits are recommended only when accompanied by international organizations.
Even aside from political tensions, general crime has risen. In major cities, pickpocketing and purse snatching are on the rise in areas frequented by tourists, sometimes involving the use of force. Public transportation carries an increased risk of theft and mugging, and aggressive beggars or street vendors at major intersections can also pose a problem. In the Cox’s Bazar region, particularly around Teknaf, there have been repeated criminal attacks in the past, some involving the use of weapons. Travelers are advised to avoid going for walks after dark, as well as using rickshaws and motorized three-wheeled taxis, and to keep important documents safe—ideally in digital form as well.
