Current Health Risks in Uganda: Marburg and Ebola Viruses
On July 1, 2026, new travel and safety advisories for Uganda were published, highlighting current health risks. In particular, the outbreak of Marburg virus infections in the Kyegegwa District and Ebola fever in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo call for increased caution.
The Marburg virus, which can cause hemorrhagic fever, was detected in western Uganda in late June 2026. Travelers should avoid direct contact with infectious bodily fluids and strictly follow the instructions of local authorities. There is currently neither a specific treatment nor a vaccine against the virus.
In addition, an Ebola outbreak has been reported in Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has also spread to Uganda. The Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus has been identified; there are currently no approved treatments or vaccines for this strain. The WHO has classified this outbreak as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern.”
Ugandan authorities have taken measures to contain the spread of the virus. These include the temporary closure of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with exceptions for medical and humanitarian missions. Travelers should check for possible entry restrictions before traveling to other countries.
Travelers to Uganda should avoid large crowds, refrain from visiting hospitals or health facilities unless necessary, and avoid contact with wild animals. If you experience symptoms that could indicate an infection, it is recommended that you contact a medical service by phone within 21 days of your stay in the affected region.
