Canada has updated its rules and objectives for issuing visitor visas, effective May 2025

Canada has introduced new rules for issuing visitor visas from May 2025. These changes are designed to simplify and structure the visa acquisition process for various categories of travelers, as well as to increase control over entry. 

Firstly, travelers are advised to check in advance whether they need a visitor visa (also known as a temporary resident visa or TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to avoid potential delays and misunderstandings at the border.  The choice of the necessary entry permit depends on a number of factors. Primarily, consider your nationality, type of travel document (e.g., regular or diplomatic passport), country of citizenship, and mode of transportation — by air, land, or sea.

The main part of the innovations is that after May 7, 2025, Canada will issue visitor visas for three main purposes: visiting the country for tourism or family purposes, participating in short-term educational programs or conferences, and for transit through Canada to other countries. 

In 2025, for most travelers, the standard duration of stay on a temporary resident visa (TRV) in Canada is six months per entry. However, border service officers have the right to establish different durations, which can be shorter or longer than this period.
