Republic of the Congo: Current Travel and Safety Information for Visitors

Updated safety and travel advisories are currently in effect for travel to the Republic of the Congo, which tourists and business travelers should carefully review before embarking on their trip. Compared to neighboring countries, the domestic political situation in the country is considered largely stable; however, there are regional factors that must be taken into account when planning a trip. For example, on the land route between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire in the Mindoulie area, National Route No. 1 may be blocked due to local conflicts. The Pool Department should therefore only be traveled through during daylight hours and by land, and proximity to police and military posts as well as demonstrations should generally be avoided.

A particular focus of these advisories is the crime situation in the major cities. In Brazzaville—particularly in the neighborhoods of Ouenze, Talangaï, Bakongo, Poto Poto, and Makélékélé—as well as in the port city of Pointe-Noire, there has been an increase in pickpocketing and purse-snatching by motorized perpetrators. Western foreigners are also regularly targeted, especially after dark. In Pointe-Noire, travelers are also advised to exercise particular caution on beaches, as increased crime has been reported there as well. Travelers are advised to use cashless payments whenever possible, carry only the bare minimum of cash, avoid wearing conspicuous jewelry, and keep important documents secure while also storing digital copies.

Climatic conditions also play a role in travel planning. The country has a hot and humid tropical climate, and heavy rains and flooding can occur nationwide, particularly during the rainy season from September through June. In such cases, roads and bridges may become temporarily impassable, which is why travelers should always take local warnings, signs, and instructions from authorities seriously.

Transportation infrastructure is another relevant issue. Domestic flights in the Congo operate primarily between Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire, Dolisie, and Ouesso; however, all airlines licensed in the country are listed on the EU’s common list of unsafe airlines. Traveling with these airlines is expressly discouraged. Road travel also carries risks: National Highway No. 1 between Brazzaville, Dolisie, and Pointe-Noire—which requires a toll—as well as National Highway No. 2 heading north present an increased risk of accidents due to reckless driving and inadequately secured trucks. The rest of the road network is largely in poor condition, and effective emergency medical care is not guaranteed outside the major cities. Power outages also occur regularly even in the major cities.

In general, anyone traveling to the Republic of the Congo should be aware of the varying security situation across different regions, exercise increased caution in major cities, and, especially when traveling overland, allow for extra time and plan alternative routes. Careful preparation—both in terms of safety and visa requirements—plays a key role in ensuring that your trip to this Central African country proceeds without major incidents.
