Entry to Egypt - Visa Requirements
Entry requirements for Egypt require visas for Germans, EU citizens, and citizens of most other countries. The same requirements apply to children as to adults. Entry without a visa is only allowed for residents of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Qatar, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates for up to 3 months. Exceptions for visa issuance and especially processing times of 3-5 weeks apply to tourists or travelers from non-EU countries such as Afghanistan, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen.

For German citizens, there are two options to apply for a visa. On one hand, the Egyptian Embassy in Berlin as well as the consulates in Frankfurt and Hamburg issue visas before the trip. On the other hand, visas on arrival are available for stays up to 4 weeks in Egypt - but only at international airports (Hurghada, Cairo, Luxor, etc.). If entering by land or sea, a visa must be obtained in advance. For non-tourist trips, a visa is always required before the trip! Tourist Visas On Arrival are also available upon entry by plane for EU citizens and nationals of the following countries: Australia, Georgia, Japan, Canada, Macedonia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Ukraine, USA. The visa fee is to be paid at one of the official bank counters on the way to passport control. Holders of service and diplomatic passports generally need a visa before departure according to Egypt's entry requirements.
Application requirements: Visa before departure
The following documents must be submitted for the visa application at a consular office abroad:
- a valid identification document
- the completed and signed application form
- 2 biometric passport photos
- possibly proof of the purpose of travel (varies depending on the length of stay and visa category)
Travelers should also carry the necessary documents even when using visas on arrival. It is recommended to organize a visa before the trip to avoid waiting times and the risk of visa rejection on-site. Turkish citizens with a Turkish passport and a valid residence permit in Germany for at least 6 months are entitled to apply for their visa at an Egyptian consular section in Germany.
Valid ID Documents: Passport
Since March 2002, German tourists have been allowed to enter Egypt with their ID card, provided they fill out a special entry form and carry a biometric passport photo with them. There is no such regulation for non-tourist purposes such as business trips. A passport is required. The following is required for the respective ID document:
- Minimum validity of 6 months on the day of arrival in Egypt
- at least one free page for the visa stamp
- Child entries in a parent's passport are no longer valid. Minors need their own valid ID document with a valid visa. The child's passport (with photo) is acceptable.
When entering with an ID card, it should be noted that not all Egyptian institutions recognize it as a sufficient document. A temporary ID card is not sufficient for a stay in Egypt, but a temporary passport with sufficient validity is.
Air travelers with a confirmed onward flight receive an entry permit for up to 24 hours in case of bad weather conditions or a maximum of 48 hours in case of a technical defect on the aircraft. Ship passengers receive a visit permit for 24 hours (or up to 3 days) during a transit stay. Short stays in the transit area of an Egyptian airport are generally visa-free.
Important information for dual citizens
The Egyptian government treats adult and minor travelers who also hold Egyptian citizenship due to their descent exclusively as Egyptians. This means that they are subject without restriction to Egyptian laws and consequently also to conscription as well as family law provisions. Children under 21 years of age with dual citizenship (e.g. German-Egyptian) are not allowed to leave Egypt without the father's consent.
