Bhutan wants to increase the number of tourists
Bhutan, famous for its breathtaking scenery, rich culture and unique Gross National Happiness philosophy, reveals ambitious plans to attract more tourists on the global tourism scene. After the coronavirus pandemic, Bhutan's entry fee (sustainability levy) was increased from $65 to $200 per person per day. But when visitor numbers began to fall, this fee was drastically reduced so that in 2023 the number of visitors was again 100,000.
Despite the restrictions caused by the pandemic, Bhutan welcomed more than 103,000 tourists last year, exceeding the target. However, more than two-thirds of the visitors came from India, which paid significantly less tax than other tourists for their stay.
Despite the significant drop in tourist numbers, the total revenue from these sustainable development fees (SDFs) in 2023 was about US$26 million. This is a record high compared to US$25 million before the pandemic.
Bhutan plans to increase the number of tourists to 300,000 this year.
