Embassies in Germany
Foreign embassies in Germany
An embassy is a diplomatic permanent mission of one State under international law, located at the residence of the Government of another State. This is the residence of the ambassador, who is charged with representing the interests of his country in the host country. As a diplomat, the Ambassador reports to his Government on the situation on the ground and, if possible, maintains intergovernmental relations. In Germany, diplomatic missions of foreign states are located primarily in Berlin. Since government functions in this country are divided according to the Berlin/Bonn Law, there are separate branches of diplomatic missions in the city of Bonn (North Rhine-Westphalia). Officials sent abroad and acting as contact persons in Germany receive diplomatic status for the duration of their stay. In terms of service, they report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of their country of origin.

How is the diplomatic representation organized?
Embassy usually consists of an office and a residence. The residence serves as the location of the ambassador, and the chancery serves as an administrative building. The Office usually includes various departments dealing with press, culture, military affairs or trade. Some Embassies also have a consular department that deals with issuing visas to foreigners and issuing passports to citizens of their country.
Protecting diplomats - what does it mean?
The buildings of the Embassies are under special protection. Visitors from the host country are prohibited from entering the territory without the consent of the head of mission. The host State, i.e. Germany, is responsible for protecting the territory and premises of the mission from any intrusion or damage. In addition, adequate measures must be taken to maintain the dignity and tranquility of the diplomatic institution. Invited diplomats are also given special protection and, in addition, diplomatic privileges.
What is the difference between consular and diplomatic missions abroad?
Consular missions primarily deal with the affairs of citizens of their country who are in the host country. In addition, Consulates or consular departments in diplomatic organizations are engaged in administrative activities, provide international legal assistance and are engaged in issuing visas to foreign citizens. The consul (consular officer) is a representative of the government. Diplomats, as a rule, are responsible for maintaining intergovernmental and supranational relations in the fields of culture, trade, economics and peacekeeping. They negotiate international treaties and represent the interests of their Government in the host country. High commissariats, nunciatures and legations are other forms of diplomatic institutions. If it is not possible to create a "real" Embassy, the permanent mission takes over the diplomatic functions.
